Road closure on B1077 Attleborough Road, Great Ellingham, Rocklands for Surface Dressing Works

Work is due to start on 01 June to surface dress a section of the The Street, Great Ellingham, Rocklands between The Street and Bow Street. To allow the work to be carried out safely and swiftly, it will be necessary to close the road to through traffic on a number of dates when the surface dressing work is underway, line painting is being carried out, and cat’s eyes (road studs) are being renewed. Access to properties will be maintained at all times.

The work, which is weather dependent, will be carried out in phases. Road closures will only be in place for a few hours at a time on the following dates:

01 June (Road Stud Removal) – Evening / Overnight Works – 19:00 – 06:00 – Road Closure

10 June (First Surface Dressing) – Evening / Overnight Works – 19:00 – 06:00 – Road Closure

25 June (Lining/ Road Stud Replacement) – Evening / Overnight Works – 19:00 – 06:00 – Road Closure

Residents and businesses are encouraged to check the advanced warning signs on site for the latest updates.

A fully signed diversion route will be in operation for the duration of the works. The County Council thanks people for their patience while this essential road maintenance work is carried out.

The work is expected to cost approximately £46,000 and will be carried out by Norfolk County Council’s Infrastructure Department and their contractor Kier Highway Services.

This year 351 miles of Norfolk’s roads will receive a new seal to extend the life of the road. The new seal consists of a thin layer of bitumen and chippings which is laid onto the road. This helps prevent water penetration and helps stop potholes opening up.

The action of vehicles passing over the new surface plays an important part in helping the new surface to settle in. People are urged to drive slowly and considerately across the new surface until it is bedded in, and highway teams return a few days later to sweep up the loose stones. Following a fire at Wiser, the recycling site in Thetford which recycles small electricals and batteries, we have had to suspend our kerbside collections of these items.

We are working hard to secure another outlet and are awaiting the compliance scheme to organise another supplier who can collect these items from us.

We will continue to advise residents via our website and social media that collections are postponed and to hang on to the items until we recommence collections.

Community Speedwatch – please see the attached poster for details of vacancies on the team

Great Ellingham is plagued by illegal speeding.

Whilst the local police do their best, they are not the solution to this problem. We are and you could be.

We already have a Community Speedwatch group, but are looking for some more volunteers.

The police will provide us with the equipment and the training; all we need to do is to devote some time. The more of us there are, the more effect we will have upon this menace and the less it will impinge upon each volunteer’s time.

From Monday 1^st September 2025 service 82 will be increasing frequency to hourly providing 3 additional journeys per day in both directions and more connections to Norwich.

Norfolk Police have complied the following advice about preventing theft of heating oil:

Heating oil security

It is inevitable that some homes will be the victim of heating oil theft. We appeal for people to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police. The following crime prevention advice is given for oil tank owners

Keep your tank in a well overlooked position – this will ensure thieves are more likely to be seen

If your tank is close to your house make sure that it can be seen from your windows – this coupled with lighting will make it less of a target

Security lights can help deter potential thieves. Low level ‘dusk ‘til dawn’ lights positioned close to the tank should, in most cases, provide sufficient light to illuminate any suspicious activity.

Enclosing your tank in a building which can be secured is better still. However it is important not to overlook the importance of ventilation; advice should be sought from your oil company.

If you have a gate keep it closed and locked when you are out.

Make sure your perimeter fence is in good condition and is not easy to climb. Consider the use of trellis on top of any rear fencing to increase height.

Invest in a good quality lock. Close shackle padlocks are recommended as they offer better resistance to bolt croppers and other tools that thieves usually come equipped with.

Check your oil gauges regularly to alert you to any potential thefts and help investigations by narrowing crime times down. Many tanks can be fitted with a gauge to monitor levels which can be read inside the house.
